Read by Grade 3: Michigan Reading Retention Law

In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law is called Read by Grade Three (RBG3). The law aims to improve the state’s concern of low reading achievement in our state. There are five (5) major components of the RBG3 law including the importance of research and standards aligned core reading instruction, assessment, individual reading improvement plans (IRIPs), professional learning, and retention. Additionally, the law requires schools and parents/guardians to partner and work together as a Read-at-Home plan is also created.Over the past several years, Michigan’s Read by Grade Three (RBG3) law (MCL 380.1280f) has provided guidance to local education agencies (LEAs), educators, and families. Recent changes to state statute are consistent with research that is unsupportive of the former retention component as a strategy to improve student academic success. The 2024 updated statute leaves in place components that require reading intervention plans and instructional supports for students and communication with families.

Trenton Public Schools is committed to supporting our students and are proud of our Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS). All students, K-5 have access to a high quality research and standards aligned curriculum. All students, K-5, are administered a universal screener. Afterward, a diagnostic test is administered in order to learn more about where a child may be struggling. If needed, Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIPs) are written to provide the child extra support in the area of need. This support may be provided as a push-in or pull-out support by the classroom teacher or reading interventionist. We meet with parents and monitor plans regularly to ensure a child is making progress.

The platform is a FERPA compliant application, and it’s available 24/7.

The Parchment system will electronically send out your official transcript checked and approved by THS to your destination colleges and universities.

Elementary Schools

Classroom teachers may request parent volunteers in their classrooms. Parents will get more information regarding specific requests at "meet the teacher nights" or through their individual teacher communication. Chaperones for field trips, classroom readers, classroom volunteers, copy moms, and party planning are all ways parents may volunteer in the classroom.

TPS Fundraising

Intro: Fundraisers & Sponsorship– In the event that a club or sport is considering fundraising activities, clearance from the Athletic Director and Building Principal must first be obtained. Upon approval, the coach is responsible to see that a representative and a coach oversee the functions of such an activity. When the fundraiser is complete, the money should be directed to the Athletic Office and deposited accordingly. In regards to sponsorship, any attempt to involve sponsorship of a team, in any fashion, must be presented for approval to the Athletic Office. Approval for sponsorship will be granted through the office of the Superintendent.

Summer Vacation:

• Students take their chromebooks home.
• Insurance purchased for the 2021-2022 school year will remain in effect until the end of the summer break.

Graduating or Students Moving out of the District:

• Graduating students/students leaving the district return their chromebooks to their school Media Center.

Your TPS Chromebook

Each Chromebook has an Asset Tag on the bottom. Please note this number and take care that the label is not removed. Include this number in any/all email requests for technical assistance.Chromebook support:chromebookhelp@trentonschools.com

Using Your TPS Chromebook

Charge the chromebook each night with the ACpower adapter provided. Take care the chromebook and adapter are placed on a sturdy surface in a location that prevents the cord from becoming a trip hazard.

It is best to use the chromebook on battery power. This prevents the cord from being an obstacle and prevents the power port from accidental damage while it is in use.

Connect theChromebook to your WiFi

1. Power on the chromebook

2. In the bottom-right corner of the screen, click into the area with the Wi-Fi symbol

3. Click "Not connected" — you'll see the Wi-Fi button turn on and it will automatically search for local networks.

4. Select you network from the available list and enter the password

If you're having trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi, you may need to restart the Chromebook and follow the steps again.

How to Log in

Your student should use the email address and password normally used when at school.

• For grades K-5, if the student does not know the login, please contact the teacher.
• Email will include first 3 initials of last name, first initial, last 5 digits of Student ID and follows with @student.trentonschools.com (for example: howk12345@student.trentonschools.com)

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

● No food or beverages should be near your Chromebook.

● Cords, cables, and removable devices should be inserted carefully into the Chromebook.

● Chromebooks should not be exposed to extreme temperatures (hot or cold). They should not be left in a car or trunk.

● Students should never carry their Chromebooks while the screen is open.

● Chromebooks should never be left in an unlocked vehicle or an unsupervised area.

SCREEN CARE

The Chromebook screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment and are sensitive to excessive pressure.

● Do not lean on the top of the laptop when it is closed.

● Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens or pencils, flash drive, etc.).

● Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. Do not use commercial glass cleaners.

Insurance purchased for the current school year will remain in effectthrough the end of summer vacation.

All damage/issues that occur after the last day of schoolmust bereportedimmediately during the summer to be covered by the insurance.

Insurance will be offered for the current school year.
