Why This Recipe Works

I was recently introduced to the magic sauce known as HOISIN SAUCE. Have you cooked with it before? If not, you must give it a try. It is unlike anything I’ve tasted before. It’s like a mix between barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce and soy sauce, except with some delicious magic thrown in.

I also love how a little bit of this stuff goes a long way. This Hoisin Chicken Rice Bowl would have been good minus the hoisin, but with it? PHENOMENAL. This simple little meal takes only 20 minutes to throw together (so easy!) and the flavor is off-the-charts yummy.

This would be a great lunch or dinner and will feed two hungry people or four kinda hungry people.

How to Make Hoisin Chicken Rice Bowls

Step 1

First, make the hoisin mixture: In a small bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ginger and red pepper flakes. Mix well and set aside.

Step 2

Heat sesame (or canola, but I much prefer sesame) oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Toss in mushrooms and red bell peppers (feel free to substitute with green or orange bell peppers) and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until veggies are soft.

Mix in the chicken pieces and cook for 6 minutes, or until meat is cooked through.

Step 3

Add the hoisin mixture to the skillet and heat until warmed through. Serve over rice and sprinkle with sesame seeds just before serving!

What To Do With Hoisin Sauce

Hoisin sauce is traditionally used as a Chinese dipping sauce. It is the delicious sauce you’ll find in most moo shu pork recipes, if you’ve ever tasted that deliciousness. It can be tossed with any meat and veggie in stir-fry and can also be used as a dipping sauce for dumplings or potstickers.

How To Spice Up My Rice Bowl

If you want an extra kick in this delicious dish, add extra red pepper flakes and/or a splash of sriracha sauce to the hoisin mixture before adding it to the chicken.

Really great recipe! We’ve even tried it with lemongrass chili hoisin and it is an awesome alternative.
