Why you’ll love this DIY lavender pillow spray recipe:

This simple recipe only requires two simple ingredients – yes, that’s right, two! It’s hard to believe something so easy can have such a big impact on your sleep quality.

Keep a glass bottle on your nightstand and make a nightly spritz part of your evening routine.

Lavender is known to de-stress and promote relaxation, which can help you have a more restful sleep.

What is pillow spray?

Pillow spray is a solution made from alcohol and pure essential oils. The idea is to spray your pillows and/or bed sheets before going to bed to help you get a good night’s sleep.

The lavender scent of this pillow spray fades as you sleep, so it’s a subtle way to add a soothing scent without it becoming too much.

It really couldn’t be easier to make your own DIY lavender spray – it just requires 2 naturalingredients and a few seconds of effort!

Benefits of Lavender

The lavender plant has been cultivated for centuries for its culinary and medicinal uses.

The easiest way to get your hands on lavender is to buy dried lavender buds or lavender essential oil.

Both products have almost all the same benefits as fresh lavender, so you don’t have to worry about missing out.

Both lavender flowers and lavender essential oil contain a compound called linalool.

Studies on linalool show that it can reduce blood pressure and anxiety, so it’s great for stress relief and has a calming effect on your nervous system.

Many studies also suggest that lavender helps boost melatonin levels to give you a better quality of sleep.

Lavender also has antimicrobial properties, so it’s great for cosmetics and cleaning products.

There are so many positive uses for lavender and practically no downsides. Skin irritation is an uncommon but potential side effect.

If you have sensitive skin, I suggest doing a patch test before making and using your own lavender pillow spray.

Equipment for Lavender Sleep Spray

To make your own pillow spray, you’ll need a 2 oz glass spray bottle and a small funnel.

I ordered these little bottles, which came with a dropper and a teeny tiny funnel.

Each box comes with 3 bottles, so it’s perfect for making homemade lavender linen spray to help your friends and family get better sleep, too!

Ingredients for DIY Lavender Pillow Spray

Alcohol: High-proof alcohol like straight vodka or rubbing alcohol will give this pillow spray the longest shelf life. You can also use unscented witch hazel.

Lavender essential oil:I always recommend buying the best quality essential oils you can afford. Look for local distillers whenever possible.

For this recipe, I ordered locally distilled lavender oils from Lavender Connection in Sequim, WA.That’s not an affiliate link – I just like them!

Why I chose Lavender Connection essential oils

I love that Lavender Connection is a local company for me, just about an hour away. They have some of the highest quality lavender essential oils, and I was excited to try different varietals of lavender in essential oil form!

I ordered Cascade Velvet, which I used in this project since it has a classic lavender scent.

Hidcote Pink has a more mild, floral scent that I can’t wait to try in other projects!

How to Make Essential Oil Pillow Spray

Tip: It’s important to use an antimicrobial base such as high-proof alcohol or witch hazel for your aromatherapy sprays.

It will act as a preservative to keep your pillow mist from growing bacteria.

Alcohol also helps the deep sleep pillow spray dry faster on your bed sheets so it doesn’t leave water marks.

Storage

Always store essential oil recipes in dark glass bottles. I prefer to use amber glass bottles, which I keep on hand for my DIY toilet spray and other projects.

If you use high-proof alcohol, like vodka, to make your own lavender linen spray, it will last indefinitely. Witch hazel can typically last for 1-2 years as well.

How to Use DIY Lavender Pillow Spray

Using this lavender pillow spray is just as easy as making it! I like to keep a small spray bottle on my nightstand so I can spritz it as part of my bedtime routine.

Give the bottle a good shake, and hold the spray nozzle about a foot above your pillow.

Spray 2-4 times and let the mist settle and dry. Enjoy sweet dreams and blissfully peaceful sleep!

  • Lavender room spray: Spray a few spritzes around your bedroom or office to create a calming atmosphere.
  • DIY linen spray: If you love the scent of lavender, keep a bottle in your laundry room and use it as a DIY linen spray!

A cute little bottle of homemade lavender sleep spray makes a great gift too! It’d be perfect to share on Mother’s Day or add it as a great eco friendly stocking stuffer!

FAQs

Can I use water to make essential oil spray?

Technically, yes, you can. There are recipes out there that call for tap water, and I’m sure they work perfectly well.

Personally, I prefer to use alcohol in this DIY sleep spray because it will keep your pillow spray from growing mold or bacteria. Since you’re spraying this directly on your pillow, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s safe to breathe.

To reduce bacterial growth, add at least a tablespoon of alcohol (vodka or rubbing alcohol) to distilled water or use a half-and-half mixture.

Can I use other types of essential oils?

Absolutely! I’m really cautious with essential oils though, and only useoils that are safe to use neat(not diluted) or to inhale.

I always recommend buying the best essential oils, which means looking for reputable companies that use high quality standards. If possible, look for organic aromatherapy oils.
